Rosella

One of our own backyard birds, and a species that does best when the cage feels a bit like the bush. Everything here suits Rosellas, from seed blends and soaking mixes through to perches, foraging toys and chews.

Lean towards natural eucalypt, banksia and native browse, and keep something green or sprouted in the bowl. Rosellas spend a lot of time picking through things on the ground, so a forage box or foraging grass usually goes down well.

Frequently Asked Rosella Questions

Are rosellas cuddly, hands-on pets?

Generally not. Rosellas tend to be more of an aviary bird, best appreciated for their colour and natural behaviour rather than handled like a cockatiel or budgie. They can still form a real bond with their owner, just rarely an especially cuddly one.

Can rosellas live with other birds?

Often not comfortably. Rosellas can be territorial or aggressive toward other rosellas and similarly sized or coloured birds, so they're usually best kept alone or in a single compatible pair rather than a mixed aviary.

What should I feed a rosella?

A quality seed blend alongside fresh vegetables.

Feather Chef Grass Parrot Blend ($15.99–$89.99) is formulated for Bourke's, Hooded, King Parrots and Rosellas specifically.

Do rosellas talk?

Rarely, and not something to expect. They're kept and valued far more for their striking colour and natural aviary behaviour than for speech.

What kind of housing does a rosella need?

Rosellas are active, confident fliers and do best in a long flight-style aviary rather than a small cage, with room to fly horizontally rather than just climb.

Aussie Bush Perches ($16.99–$23.99) help recreate a more natural setup.
