Parrotlet

Tiny birds with enormous opinions. Parrotlets pack the attitude of a Macaw into a budgie sized body, and they need enrichment to match.

Everything sized for them in one place: small seed blends and pellets, foot toys and shredders they can actually carry, foraging toys, perches for little feet, and the health basics. Pick a few small toys over one big one and keep swapping them around, because a bored Parrotlet will find its own entertainment.

Frequently Asked Parrotlet Questions

Are parrotlets really as feisty as people say for their size?

Yes. These "pocket parrots" are only around 12–13cm long but often have a personality as big as any large parrot, and can be nippy or territorial, especially without early, consistent socialisation.

Are parrotlets noisy?

Much quieter than most parrot species, which makes them a popular choice for apartments. They're still capable of chirping and calling, just without the piercing volume of a conure or cockatoo.

What should I feed a parrotlet?

A pellet-based diet with fresh vegetables and a small-seed blend.

Feather Chef Lovebird Blend ($15.99–$89.99) is formulated for lovebirds and parrotlets specifically, and Vetafarm Nutriblend Mini Pellet ($15.99–$124.99) is a palatable mini pellet option.

Should I get one parrotlet or a pair?

A single parrotlet bonds closely to its owner and needs daily interaction to stay content. A pair will keep each other company, but unlike lovebirds, parrotlets can sometimes squabble with a same-sex companion, so introductions are best done gradually in neutral space.

What size cage and setup does a parrotlet need?

Smaller than a standard parrot cage, but with narrow bar spacing given how small they are. A Small Bird Bath ($10.99) is a nice, appropriately sized addition, parrotlets are among the species it's designed for.
