A minimum of around 60 x 60 x 75cm (24 x 24 x 30in) for one bird, with bar spacing of 1.3–2.5cm. Bigger is always better, so the bird can fully stretch and flap without hitting the sides.

A balanced pelleted diet with a measured portion of seed and daily fresh vegetables works best. Avoid avocado, and don't rely on seed alone, since it's the most common cause of nutritional problems in this species.

With proper diet, housing and vet care, 16–25 years is typical, and some live longer. This is a long-term commitment, not a short-lived pet.

Some do, but they're better known for whistling than talking, with males generally more vocal than females. Teaching either skill takes patience and consistent, short daily sessions.

Fluffed posture, tail bobbing, reduced droppings or laboured breathing should prompt an immediate vet visit, since cockatiels can decline quickly once they show symptoms.
